The phosphatic clay resource is a byproduct of phosphate mining in central Florida. This resource currently occupies approximately 100,000 acres. The clay in the ponds came out of the ground as part of the matrix, which naturally contains the radioactive elements uranium and radium.
In the 1930s the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) began research on the production of phosphate fertilizers by electric furnace process. The TVA's electric furnaces were at Muscle Shoals, Alabama. A mining and washing division was built in Columbia.
The Phosphate Beneficiation Flowsheet Phosphate Ore Mining. Electrically operated drag lines strip off the overburden from the mining area and deposit the phosphate matrix around a pump pit. Here it is sluiced with streams of high pressure water to the suction of a large centrifugal pump which transports the matrix slurry to the washing plant which may be a mile or two away.
Phosphate Mining Linked To Sinkholes. ... Over the past seventy years, Florida's phosphate industry let many manmade severe environmental accidents occur one after another over the years, causing serious environmental impacts to pristine "one of a kind" ecological regions of Florida.
The issue of how much water Mosaic pumps out of the ground was explored by a 2013 environmental impact study on phosphate mining commissioned by the Army Corps of Engineers.

At Ma'aden, we mine phosphate rock and process it into phosphate products, including diammonium phosphate (DAP) and monoammonium phosphate (MAP), the most widely used phosphate fertilizers in modern agriculture.
The Mining Process. Strip mining for phosphate rock violently transforms the environment, irreparably changing the character of the natural landscape. In many cases mines displace species and eat up thousands of acres of valuable habitat that are impossible to truly restore to their natural state. In Florida habitat loss is a significant issue ...
